The name 'Toyopet' is called because of its small-sized sedan class car, it is first launched in 1957 as a first generation model named as 'T10'. It used 'S' engine with 33PS power, later on modifications was done in 1958 with additional hood ornament and door handle. In 1959, 'S' engine was replaced by 'OHV P' series engine with more power of 45PS@5000rpm with the capacity of traveling 105 km/hr. Toyota had planned in manufacturing small cars because mainly for the taxi purpose.
In 1960, Toyota had come up with T20 version of Corona which was also called as Tiara that was firstly launched in North America. This model had 'P' Series engine with power of 45PS, 1.0Litre capacity, 3-speed manual transmission with top speed of 110 km/hr. Later on, in 1961 it came with 'R' Series engine and 1.5litre capacity which then increased to 1.9litre in 1964. But Tiara did not yield much in sales volume.
The 3rd generation corona model was founded in 1964 with variants: Sedan, 2-door hardtop, 3-door van, 5-door station wagon, 5-door hatchback. The T40's Corona was designed by an Italian automobile designer Battista Farina. T40 had given a performance of 140 km/hr speed, these models were fuel-efficiency vehicles with 1198CC 2P engine powered with 55PS@5000rpm and lead with 500Kg(2-seater) and 300Kg(5-seater) of weight capacity. The version was replaced in 1967 with '3P' and '2R' engine powered 77PS and 65PS.
T60 was brought in market in 1970 as T80 Series Corona with complete altered. It came in three trim levels mainly: DX, 1600 DX and 1600 SL with 1.5Ltre @77PS, 1.6 Ltre@85-100PS with varying on specifications. In the year 1972, it came out with additional modifications of 4-cylinder SOHC engine and had 2.0ltre of gasoline units in addition. By this time, the size of the car was altered from small sized to long length.
During the year 1982, T140 - 7th generation Corona was released as rear-wheel drive car with variants like Sedan, Coupe and Station Wagon. Later in 1987, T150 was launched as front-wheel drive model which was also called as 'Corona FF', it was further made available in 1983 with 5-door lift-back body style with 1.8ltre giving power of 100PS and it had became the first model to come up with LCD display meter gauges.
Toyota Corona had come up with 11 generation models where the name was changed to 'Toyota Avensis' with series named T220 in 11th generation brought into market in 1997. This model was mainly marketed in the European markets. Featured 4-cylinder engine with 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0 gasoline and diesel used for taxi models. Avensis was sold in America with same name as 'Corona' which had 2.0ltre '3S-FE' engine type. This was the last model built by Toyota continued till 2002. Toyopet had a great success in the market which led to its growth till 11 successful generations.
